The man on the radio’s got it all wrong
Says he’s got some bad news to pass along
Those clouds comin’ in, well, they’re here to stay
And our weekend’s gonna get washed away
So let’s break out that good champagne
The one that we’ve been saving for a rainy day
We can turn the lights down low
Let the heavens open up and hold each other close
Listen to a tin roof serenade, sweet music from the sky
We can find a rhythm of our own
Rollin' with the thunder all weekend long
There's no better place I'd rather be
Yeah a little bad weather sounds pretty good to me
We might be waking up to a soggy day
Maybe on the TV we’ll hear 'em say
The roads are all closed, you can’t get far
If you don’t have plans better stay where you are
Then you can roll right back in my arms
We’ll find a way we can weather this storm
Repeat Chorus
I know that ol' sun might wanna shine
But I don't care, it can take it's own sweet time
We can find a rhythm of our own
Rollin' with the thunder all weekend long
There's no better place I'd rather be
Yeah a little bad weather sounds pretty good
A little bad weather sounds pretty good
A little bad weather sounds pretty good to me
Aw Yeah
This idea actually started out about a little town in a drought praying for rain. I envisioned a farming community with brown fields, dust, and record high heat celebrating in their little town square the day the "bad weather did good."
I can't speak for all songwriters, but at some point in every song I write, I ask the question: "Could this be about a girl?" And once I stumbled across the idea of bad weather doing us good, it quickly changed from being about a small town in a drought to a story involving a girl.
Connie and I were on a pretty good streak of co-writes. So, I emailed her an early version of "Bad Weather Sounds Pretty Good" with a rough first verse and chorus. She immediately had two great suggestions. Get to the chorus quicker and shorten the title to "Bad Weather."
From there this thing took off. We wrote it emailing back and forth over a few days time. As mentioned, my original first verse was a little long. Connie split it in half. The second half served as a starting point for the second verse that we tweaked over the next few days. And she cleaned up my original chorus and made it much more singable.
We submitted it to the Nashville Songwriters Association for a professional critique. It got a very well received review and was forwarded on to their monthly pitch to publisher luncheon where selected songs are played for publishers to hear. The reviewer made one suggestion, though that I'm glad we listened to: add a two line bridge.
Connie and I have received a lot of positive feedback on this one. It was one of the few that writers love to experience where it kind of just falls out. It was fun to write, and once again I was blessed to have Connie as a co-writer on this one.
